Hasek Ceremony Panned, by Matt Barnaby of All People
The Sabres retired the jersey of the greatest goalies of all-time last week and instead of misty-eyed reverence and spine-tingling nostalgia – we got more douchey Twitter snark than Sharknado 2.
Yes, the ceremony was lame, but all snarkiness should be put on hold when Matthew Barnaby speaks up. The former enforcer, known locally for police reports of domestic incidents, felt the need to tell SiriusXM NHL Radio that the ceremony was ‘embarrassing.’ Barney also hinted that the Dominator isn't the most popular alumnus -- and the two of them aren’t friends. No shit.
In 25 years, nobody will remember if Hasek’s retirement ceremony
was a brief, slap-dash affair filled with awkward silences or a 90-minute swoon-a-thon. However, the Sabres will still have that banner in the rafters,
which is all future generations will care about.
Deslauries Bringing Grit, Not Goals
When the retirement of a legend’s jersey can’t even lift fans’ spirits, you have to go deep and start looking at things like grit and determination. Deslauriers might not be filling the net, but at least he's throwing his body around and tossing fists like Tony Twist. In a scrap with Minnesota’s Mathew Dumba, Deslauriers popped the kid’s helmet off like a pro – two punches in. The ensuring combination of hooks and uppercuts made this something you might want to watch on repeat.
Goalie Fatigue Taking a Toll
Speaking of being mercilessly pounded, the two Sabre goalies have seen more rubber than Transit Road on a Friday night. The team average of 35.1 per game is a good 1.1 shots higher than the next lowest team in Colorado. Given than both Enroth and Neuvirth are seeing that much rubber, its not surprising that these two are starting to leak goals.
Gionta Missed
Knocked out on a suicide pass by Bruins defenseman Matt Bartkowski, Gionta has been missed as the Sabres have gone 1-12-0 in his absence. While its tough to argue that the team might have a winning record with him in the side, its not hard to see that the Sabres have lost a lot of the drive and determination that sparked them on a 5-1 run through the end of November. His return to the lineup after the all-star break should be an interesting experiment in testing the value of locker room leadership.
